In the digital age, touch screens are everywhere—from smartphones and tablets to ATMs and self-serve check-in kiosks for airlines and rental cars. But, have you ever stopped to think of how these smooth, interactive screens actually operate? So how do touch screens work?

1. Resistive Touch Screens

 

In resistive screens there are 2 flexible layers of conductive material treated on both sides. When you touch the screen, the layers make contact, completing an electrical circuit. The device branches based on the change in voltage to determine the particular touch point. These screens are tough and compatible with any stylus or glove, but not as sensitive as some kinds.

 

2. Capacitive Touch Screens

 

Capacitive touch screens are found in abundance of mobile devices and tablets. The screens are layered with a conductive material (such as indium tin oxide) that holds an electric charge. When you touch your finger to the screen, it disrupts the electrostatic field, and sensors pinpoint the exact locati0n of the disruption. The capacitive screen is very responsive, however, it needs a conductive input (such as your finger, or a kind of special pen).

Some larger screens, such as interactive whiteboards, rely on infrared or optical sensors. These screens have sensors placed around the edges of the screen that can detect interruptions in infrared light or camera-based tracking when you touch the surface.
